DIAMANT penetration depth function test
Maximum performance for your coating sealing system

Thermal Spraying

Does your sealer have proof of function?

To achieve long-term protection of your thermal sprayed coating, it is important that the sealer penetrates deeply into the TS layer. Sealers that only adhere to the surface or penetrate minimally will be removed along with the TS layer during finishing or after a few hours of operation. The remaining layer is unprotected and thus susceptible to e.g. corrosion damage.

In cooperation with the Institute of Surface Technology (IOT) at RWTH Aachen University, we have succeeded in developing a fast and cost-effective detection method for the penetration behavior of sealers into thermally sprayed coatings. We use this method to ensure that our sealers really work in interaction with your TS layer and the respective process parameters and deliver lasting performance.

We check the function of your sealer!

With the new DIAMANT penetration depth function test based on permeability measurements it is possible to get a clear statement about the penetration depth of the sealer. This helps us to develop a sealer that perfectly matches your specific coating, penetrates the complete TS layer and guarantees maximum performance!

Subsequently, a joint detailed analysis of your specific layer sealer system will be performed with our managing director and test developer Dipl.-Ing. Carsten Kunde.

Only a layer completely sealed up to the carrier body is permanently protected against corrosion!

For the test, we use special carrier bodies made of sintered metal. These carriers are coated by you with your spray parameters and thus represent a 100% suitable, practical laboratory sample of your TS coating. We measure the coated specimens and apply the sealer in our laboratory. The specimens are then ground step by step and the permeability of the carrier bodies is determined. The penetration depth of the sealer correlates with the measured permeability and can thus be clearly determined for each sample.

What are the benefits of the penetration depth function test?

Example 1

INITIAL SITUATION:
HVOF – WC coating with 200 µm layer thickness
Existing sealant 4h curing at RT, solvent-based sealant

DIAMANT solution:
Solvent-free sealant, 2h curing at RT without heating

RESULT:
– Increased penetration depth
– Time saving
– Environmentally friendly, as without VOC

Example 2

INITIAL SITUATION:
APS – Al203 coating with 1.000 µm layer thickness
Existing sealant 1h curing at RT + 1h at 150°C

DIAMANT solution:
Application at 30 – 50°C, curing 4h RT

RESULT:
– Increased penetration depth
– Cost and time savings due to curing without heat treatment
