Safe and clear travel on German roads: Flash refurbishment of gantries with MM1018

On Germany’s freeways, thousands of static and dynamic gantries ensure optimum traffic guidance and perfect orientation. The traffic sign supports, which can weigh up to 40 tons, have to meet the highest requirements every day, remain stable in all weather conditions and withstand dynamic wind loads. To ensure stability and traffic safety, the supporting structures are checked regularly and refurbished promptly if necessary. The Liquid Lining Sheet® MM1018 from DIAMANT Polymer GmbH is increasingly being used throughout Germany for the force-fit compensation of gaps and tolerances at the transom-to-beam connections, which are subject to particularly high loads.

Gap compensation at the transom-stem connections of gantries can be carried out quickly, reliably and in accordance with the ZTV-ING specifications using the Liquid Lining Sheet® from DIAMANT. MM1018 enables the creation of a 100% support and a friction-locked connection.

The highly filled metal polymer can be used to efficiently ensure the fatigue strength that is vital for gantries from Hamburg to Munich. The two-component reactive resin system can be used as a paste or liquid and can be filled or injected. It is extremely resistant to external influences.

Compression swelling tests to determine the fatigue strength of gap filling material in cooperation with the Institute for Building Materials Research (ibac) at RWTH Aachen University have produced the best values for DIAMANT’s Liquid Lining Sheet® and demonstrated its particular suitability for use in the refurbishment of sign gantries. DIAMANT Polymer GmbH offers the option of taking over the entire work involved in the refurbishment of gantries – including applying for the highway to be closed.

During the refurbishment of gantries in the greater Bremen area at the end of 2020, all areas to be worked on were reached on the same day thanks to a mobile barrier. The lanes were closed for only approx. 45 minutes each.

On the first day of this renovation measure, the injection connections for the actual gap compensation were installed by qualified DIAMANT technicians. They also sealed the gap with MM1018 Seal. On the second day, the gap was injected with MM1018 FL Liquid Lining Sheet®. This has a compressive strength of 161 N/mm² and is therefore ideally suited to withstand the considerable loads.

Thanks to the sophisticated injection process and professional execution by trained personnel, 100% gap filling is ensured. DIAMANT Managing Director Carsten Kunde is delighted to be able to make “a significant contribution to increasing road safety throughout Germany” with our MM1018 polymer system.
