The future of steel structures: Research project shows success with injection screws

Research meets practice: Injection screws tested on the Leverkusen bridge in collaboration with the Chair of Steel Construction at the Technical University of Dortmund.

The use of injection screws in the maintenance of dynamically stressed steel structures shows promising results. The introduction of this technology in bridge constructions could considerably reduce the time and effort previously required to manufacture fitting screws.

On the Leverkusen bridge, 20 injection screws were installed at longitudinal rib joints in the cantilever area in order to test and evaluate the efficiency of this method directly on the structure. By using MM1018, the existing hole clearance was successfully converted into a slip-free shear-hole connection.
