Another impressive example of the use of MM1018 is its application on the Msikaba Bridge in South Africa. The cable-stayed bridge is one of the country’s most important infrastructure projects. During the installation of the anchor blocks, thermal deformation occurred on the embedded base plate as a result of welding processes. This base plate is used to anchor the tension cables. The resulting distortions meant that there was no longer full contact between the base plate and the bearing plate – a prerequisite for uniform and safe force transmission. To restore a form-fitting and force-fitting transition, the resulting gap was injected with MM1018, the liquid version of the product. First, the annular gap between the sleeve embedded in the ground and the bearing plate was sealed all around with MM1018 Seal. Then, the liquid metal was injected precisely through the designated inlet and vent openings. This measure ensured a permanent connection between the base plate and the bearing plate – and thus the load-bearing capacity and safety of the entire anchoring structure.
MM1018 once again proved its effectiveness as a precise, permanently load-bearing and globally proven solution for gap compensation in highly stressed component connections.
