The Müngsten Bridge, opened in 1897 as the “Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge,” spans the Wuppertal valley at a length of 465 meters and rises 107 meters above the river. After more than 113 years of continuous railway operation, corrosion, material fatigue, and structural damage to important components such as gusset plates and bearings had been detected. In particular, the 28 roller bearings and 126 cover bearings had to be completely replaced.
The irregular geometry of the historic gusset plates posed a particular challenge. MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim® offered the optimal solution here: The two-component metal-polymer could be applied directly on site – as a filler for the cap bearings and in liquid form for the roller bearings. The material adapts completely to even complex geometries, cures within 24 hours, and ensures a permanent force- and form-fitting connection.
Thanks to its fast workability and high chemical and mechanical resistance, the renovation was completed within the tight timeframe of 21 days. MM1018 played a key role in the successful renovation of this historic bridge and enabled its future-proof use in modern railway operations.
