100 % force- and form-fit gap compensation in steel and bridge construction

MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim® is the clever solution for full-surface connection of construction surfaces. Tolerances, gaps and imperfections are a well-known problem in steel and bridge construction, which can often not be avoided and lead to costly delays and structural weaknesses.

Therefore, what can be done to ensure the structural specification of full-surface connections? Machining the flange surface, e.g. by milling, is often impracticable, expensive and reduces the cross-section of the component. Conventional lining and wedge plates are mostly inexpensive, but usually only offer punctual support and are not a reliable solution, especially under dynamic load.

DIAMANT Polymer provides a simple, effective and cost-efficient solution for 100% gap compensation with the MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim®. Even for preloaded connections. The certified 2-component metal polymer with building approval adapts to any gap geometry and provides a full-surface connection of the flanges. The material can be used preventively as a putty compound before the surfaces are joined. Alternatively, it can be injected into the existing gap as a liquid variant.

Gap compensation on the highest railway bridge in the world

The Chenab Bridge in India, towering at 359 meters, surpasses even the Eiffel Tower. For the force-fit connection of the massive support pillars, MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim® was the ideal solution. Successfully applied since 2017, it was later used for all bridge bearings, ensuring stable and even load transmission.

Gap compensation at the „little Golden Gate Bridge“

Lisbon’s Ponte 25 de Abril, a 3.2 km long suspension bridge, carries both road and rail traffic and is visually reminiscent of the Golden Gate Bridge. During the replacement of 500 bridge bearings in 2021, ensuring even load distribution was crucial.

A perfect task for MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim®, which provided gap-free force transmission while the bridge remained in operation.

Mandovi Railway Bridge – Bearing replacement in record time

At the Mandovi Railway Bridge in Goa, India, aging bearings had to be replaced within a 4-hour window due to ongoing rail traffic. Traditional methods were not an option.

Thanks to the rapid curing of MM1018 – The Liquid-Shim®, force-fit gap compensation was achieved efficiently. A specially developed injection pad further accelerated the process, ensuring stability and safety under extreme time pressure.

Use of MM1018 - The liquid lining sheet® from DIAMANT Polymer GmbH at the caulking gate of the Riedenburg lock

Despite adverse weather conditions, the Riedenburg lock was reopened for shipping in good time while the above-mentioned product was being processed at the caulking gates.

[...] The work was carried out under the supervision of DIAMANT's specialist staff. This ensured optimum processing.
Although the management of the office initially doubted whether the material had hardened sufficiently in the low outside temperatures, the material was measured to have hardened by 82% after approx. 20 hours. This meant that the Riedenburg lock could be reopened to shipping on time for the prescribed date.

Reference on the use of the gap filling material MM1018 from DIAMANT as part of the renovation of the Müngsten Bridge

[...] MM1018 - The Liquid-Shim® was used by DB Netz AG to carry out a complete overhaul of the riveted steel structure of the Müngstener Bridge, which is over 100 years old.

MM1018 was used to connect new parts, such as bearings or profile reinforcements, to the partially weathered and corroded existing parts. MM1018 forms a positive and non-positive connection between the new component and the existing one.

The work was carried out under the supervision of DIAMANT's specialist staff. By using your gap compensation material, it was possible to carry out the overall upgrade with the required tolerance. Compared to alternative methods, the use of MM1018 shortened the road closure by at least 30 working days. Alternative methods would also have been many times more expensive.

We hereby confirm the technical suitability of your product and the economic benefit of the gap compensation MM1018. The work was carried out successfully with the support of your specialists. The use of MM1018 is planned for further areas of application at DB Netz AG.

Repair of rail joints on container gantry cranes by Gap compensation using MM1018 - The Liquid-Shim®

A well-known problem with container gantry cranes is the connection point at the swiveling jib transition. At this point, the boom of the crane can be pulled upwards by 90° to enable upwards to allow the ships to dock and unload. At this hinged transition, the trolley rail often settles or shifts. This creates an unevenness in the rail joint, which causes severe wear to the rail and wheels.

As a result, the wheels do not roll properly and there is noise and bumping when the trolley passes.

In collaboration with DIAMANT Polymer GmbH, we have developed a renovation concept that has already been implemented several times. MM1018 - The Liquid-Shim® is used as a pressure-resistant leveling material to level out gaps, joints and imperfections and to create positive and non-positive connections between metal surfaces.

The new renovation method enabled us to achieve significant time and cost savings. The first transition from land to water was refurbished on 13.07.2021 and is still in perfect condition today. Further assignments followed in the course of 2022 and we plan to implement this refurbishment concept for other container gantry cranes if required.
